A private developer in Njoro was on Tuesday forcefully evicted from a construction site by angry residents for allegedly encroaching on public land.

According to the residents, the land was government property proposed for the construction of a cemetery but claimed the developer was taking advantage of a National Environmental Management Authority clearance to grab it.

Maurice Maina who sits in the local development committee said there must be a conspiracy within the county ranks to facilitate the grabbing.

"He is not from the county which raises more questions on how he could have known of the existence of the land. I am sure he is being used by powerful forces from either the political or government circles," he said.

He said at the recent committee session, it was clear that the construction was not far from commencing as all the necessary documents had been acquired.

"What stalled us was an environmental assessment impact to ascertain if the land is safe to be used for a cemetery," he added.

It took the intervention of police who were at some point forced to lob teargas canisters in the air to disperse the irate residents who destroyed all the demarcations that had been placed on the land.
