Lack of public land in Ogembo town, Gucha Sub County has hindered construction of a bus terminus for public service vehicles and motorcycles in the area.

According to Boochi ward administrator, where the town is located, Evans Mauti, the highly congested town lacks public space to construct not only a public bus terminus but also a market for ever growing traders in the area.

He confirmed during an interview on Friday that this scenario is partly contributing to increasing number of accidents in the region because there is no proper demarcation on where operations for traders and drivers and pedestrians are to take place.

"All the public land that people are suggesting belongs to various government ministries which have various projects planned for," he said.

The ward administrator revealed that before the inception of the devolution government a site had been chosen and construction started but was halted by National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) which said it would be detrimental to the residents.

"NEMA raised concerns of possible contamination of River Gucha which serves many people downstream, due to dumping that they say will start if the terminus is built too near the river," he added.

Mauti says talks are underway with traffic base commander, the area OCPD and ministry of lands provide a solution since the current terminus self-imposed by motorists has turned into an accident blackspot.

Two weeks ago four people died in an accident at the area leading to demonstrations by motorcycle operators.

Mauti is calling upon the area traders and public service vehicle operators to be patient as they look for a sustainable solution.
