A Nyamira elderly woman who has been living with her two grandchildren has a reason to smile after well-wishers helped her with goodies ranging from clothing to foodstuffs.

Mrs Alice Okemwa is said to have been abandoned by her relatives with her daughter leaving her two children under the care of the 75-year-old woman.

However, her troubles might have come to an end after well-wishers, led by Ms Sophia Nyamoita visited her on Thursday and helped her clean her jigger-infested homestead.

“The old in the society should be respected and as residents we have more to do. Many of them are abandoned and live impoverished lives. We must be ready to make a difference in their lives after years of contributing to our society,” Sophie said.

The aid comes moments after a concerned villager posted pictures of the granny on the official Facebook page of Nyamira County, raising questions about the contributions of the county government in helping the needy.

“The county government hasn’t really done enough to help the old in the society. Further, the aid given by the national government never really reaches the actual beneficiaries," said Sophie.

Mrs Okemwa termed the help as a ‘dream come true’, besides thanking the well-wishers for offering to take care of the abandoned children.
