Motorists in Kiambu County risk a Sh2,000 fine or a jail term for exceeding speed limits.
The county’s Base Commander Chief Inspector Gabriel Mulei said motorists should adhere to the 50km/h speed limit in all built up areas and when approaching trading centres, townships or markets.
Speaking in his office on Thursday, the inspector said drivers who will be arrested for speeding in the said areas will pay a fine of Sh2,000 or one month imprisonment on a first conviction, and three months term on a second conviction.
“The first and second convictions do not guarantee disqualification, however, there is a provision in the law where the police can ask the licensing authority to disqualify drivers facing a second conviction,” said Mulei.
He said schools and colleges must have road signs to guide drivers on the minimum speed limits and where they should resume normal speed.
