Kisii County is set to have a new face after Governor James Ongwae assented into law the Kisii County Solid Waste Management Bill, 2015 on Wednesday.
According to the governor, the Bill will enable the County Government to protect and promote a clean environment, health and well-being of the people in the county.
The governor thanked the assembly for passing the bill, saying it provides an effective legal and administrative framework within which the County Government shall manage and regulate activities that have the potential to impact adversely on the environment.
Flanked by County Assembly Speaker Kerosi Ondieki, Chief Whip Henry Moracha, Deputy Leader of minority Shem Ondara and County Secretary Jonstone Ndege, the Governor observed that the bill requires premises to be properly maintained and managed.
The governor said that the bill defines the rights and obligations of the County Government and the public in ensuring that the environment is clean and safe.
"This bill will ensure that the environment is kept clean for the good of our people's health," Ongwae said.
The bill requires the owner of any residential or trade premises to deal with waste from the premises in accordance with the directions issued by the County Government.
