Kisii Governor James Ongwae has warned ward administrators and chiefs against registering people from ‘well-off’ families as beneficiaries for the county government's National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) scheme.

The county has a scheme where it will be paying NHIF bills for the elderly and vulnerable members of the society to access quality health care services in certified health facilities.

Ongwae clarified that the medical insurance scheme targets vulnerable members of the society across the county, to ensure they benefit from the scheme in accessing medical services with ease.

Speaking at Nyamache Stadium after commissioning a theatre unit at Nyamache Level4 Hospital in Bobasi sub-county, Ongwae disclosed that the NHIF Bill was pending at the Kisii County Assembly, and immediately the Members approved it and signed into an Act, the County Government will roll out the medical insurance programme for the elderly people in the County.

“I am warning my ward administrators and chiefs against registering members of the public from economically endowed family backgrounds as beneficiaries for the upcoming NHIF payments for the elderly and disadvantaged in the society,” warned Ongwae.

He further disclosed that the NHIF scheme was part of his social protection agenda in his campaign manifesto, to ensure citizens from the county live decent lives for them to contribute towards improvement of the County's economy.
