People Living with Disability in Kisumu County have expressed their displeasure with the manner in which the ongoing demolitions are being conducted.
The Kenya National Highways Authority is carrying out the demolitions for road expansion where structures built on road reserves are brought down destroying innocent peoples’ property in the process.
A disabled businessman at Chemelil in Muhoroni constituency, Walter Makosonde said he lost his sewing machine and most of other valuable items. Makosonde also claims a plot that was meant for him to relocate to from the road reserve has been taken away from.
Speaking to the press at the Kisumu County assembly grounds on Wednesday, Makosonde said he has a family and children in school and wondered how he will survive.
“I have nothing as a source of livelihood, my machine was crashed during the demolition and my valuables stolen,” he said.
The representative of the people living with disability in the Kisumu County Assembly, Ms Caroline Agwanda condemned the incidents.
Agwanda said people living with disability are the most affected and should be given priority in the allocation of new businesses premises. She called upon county ward administrators to ensure people with disability get proper services and report any cases of discrimination.
“People should not be discriminated upon due to their condition. I will struggle to ensure they receive fair treatment,” she said.
