Police on Friday destroyed 645 litres of illicit alcohol seized from different parts of Kisumu town in the ongoing crackdown on illicit brews.
The second generation liquor was poured into sewer system in Kasagam area in Nyalenda ward after inter-agency approval.
The officials from Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs), Public Health officials, Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company and Nema were also present during the exercise.
County Environmental Officer from Nema Daniel Mututho said right measures were put in place before alcohol was poured into the sewer system.
Mututho said requirements under water quality regulation of 2006 were followed.
Kisumu County police boss Nelson Njiri, who led the operation, said the liquor was confiscated in Obunga slums, Subuni Road, Nubian Estate and Bus Park area.
He said the crackdown on illicit liquor was conducted by county security and intelligence committee.
Njiri added that Kebs and Nema officials were also involved in the raid after a tip off by the public.
The crackdown has also been conducted in Muhoroni, Nyando, Seme and Nyakach sub counties where more than 1,000 litres of brews were nabbed.
Njiri said 264 people have been arrested and taken to court since the start of the raid.
He said war on illicit alcohol has been conducted professionally without destroying people’s property.
Njiri was with Kisumu East police boss Christopher Mshimbi, APs Quick Response Team Commander Karanja Muiruri and APs Inspector Augustine Kamaria.
Karanja said they will not relent in the war on illicit alcohol and hard drugs. “We will arrest those people operating unlicensed businesses,” he said.
He said illicit liquor increases crime as drunkards will do anything, including criminal activities, to raise money to buy alcohol.
Karanja urged the public to continue volunteering information that will lead to the arrest of those operating illegal businesses.
