Three suspected carjackers were on Tuesday evening apprehended in Ruiru while one escaped after an attempt to lynch them by the public was thwarted by security officers.
The suspects are said to have tried to abduct a driver of a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) who had been driving from Ruiru Stadium to a car wash where the four allegedly attacked him and forced him to drive into a bush.
According to Ruiru OCPD Isaac Thuranira, a businessman saw the incident and notified the others who followed the vehicle closely monitoring the suspects. They said the suspects were forcing the driver out of the vehicle and one of them had taken over the wheel.
The OCPD said that the public cornered the suspects and gave them a beating before police arrived at the scene saving them from the wrath of the mob.
“They had already ordered tyres and petrol and they were being delivered when my officers arrived at the scene. We convinced them that we are going to prosecute them and that is when they released them,” the officer confirmed.
The police say they recovered a gun and a number of mobile phone SIM cards from the suspects who are currently being held at the Ruiru Police Station for interrogation before they are arraigned in court.
Following the incident, the PSV drivers in the area have joined residents along Kiambu Road in Ruiru to protest against the increasing criminal incidences in the area on Wednesday morning.
