A 26-year-old man was on Thursday jailed for the next 12 months after he was convicted of possessing stolen property.
Victor Alal was sentenced to 16 months behind bars and four months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
Passing sentence, Kisumu Chief Magistrate Lucy Gitari said that the accused ignorantly possessed goods without bothering to find out about their origin, and the law was to take its course as it has clear guidelines regarding such crimes.
“He gave different statements during the trial and he failed to prove that the goods belonged to him or from where he bought them,” said Magistrate Gitari.
The prosecution desk told the court that Alal, a resident of Mamboleo, on November 14 2014, unlawfully entered two households and took electronic machines which he went and started using at his home.
He is said to have stolen a decoder and a DVD from the alleged households. The charges of theft were earlier dismissed as the prosecution desk had failed to prove that the accused had indeed stolen.
The accused was facing charges of theft and being in possession of stolen good. He had earlier denied the charges.
In his defence, the accused told the court that the items belonged to him but he could not prove that he was the owner as he had lost the receipts.
