A group of widows from Borabu Constituency have urged their counterparts to engage in farming to sustain their families and avoid over dependency.

The group that consists mainly of young widows has been making profits from kale farming and believes that widows could forget their troubles if they embrace farming.

Speaking to this reporter on Tuesday, Matutu Widow’s group chairlady Eunice Nyanduko said farming was the only way widows could get out of extreme poverty and help sustain their young families.

“Farming pays and we can be a living example. From the kales we have been farming, we have been able to construct rental houses in the neighbouring Keroka and we are targeting a piece of land in Kisii Town. Most of us were widowed when we were very young and formed the group to avoid over dependency,” she said.

Mrs Nyanduko however challenged the national and county governments to come up with a special kitty that could be used to empower the young widows.

“The truth of the matter is that many have expressed interest in farming but they do not have starting capital and I would appeal to the national and county government to come up with a special kitty for us,” she added.

She however faulted her colleagues who were allegedly engaging in immorality to sustain their families yet they had access to capital and land to start farming business.

“We are currently reaching widows who are engaging in immorality. We will identify them as a group and enable them use the available resources to start farming businesses,” she said.
