Former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga has expressed his intention of to start a tour of all Kenyan universities to give public lectures on democratic governance.
The endeavour that he hinted might begin in early 2016 he says is part of his efforts to share his experiences and aspirations with young people on the country's liberation and democratisation history for posterity.
Odinga underscored the importance of young people getting first hand experience and testimonies from champions of the country's democratic and liberation struggle to inform them "where the country has come from and where it is going".
Speaking at Kisii University during a public lecture by a literary scholar and accomplished African writer, Professor Ngugi wa Thiong'o, the Cord Leader promised students in Kisii University that he would visit the institution at a future unspecified date to deliver the public lecture he says will enable them understand his history and the struggle of good governance and democracy in the country.
"This year and next year, I will dedicate my energy and time going round campuses and universities across the country, delivering public lectures to the public and students on democratic governance as part of efforts to empower our young people to understand the history of our country in terms of where we have come from and where we intend to go," stated Odinga.
Odinga identified Thiong'o as one of the Kenyan scholars who was detained without trial together with him at Kamiti Maximum Prison when they tried to challenge the authoritarian regime.
"I share a common degree with my brother, Prof Thiong'o. We both have a degree in 'Prison Graduates," stated Odinga, amid applause from the congregation.
He said that, he and others like Thiong'o have played a great role in ensuring Kenyans enjoy the current expansion in democratic space.
