A senior lecturer at Kisii University was on Thursday arrested by police following allegations he was demanding sexual favours from female students to award marks.

Kisii County Commander of Police Mr Simon Kiragu said the don was arrested following persistent sexual harassment made to a female student in the faculty he teaches.

Kiragu confirmed that the lecturer, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was taken to the University during investigations and denied the allegations.

He said he was grilled at the police station before being released on bond.

“The lecturer was arrested by police officers in conjunction with officers from the University after a dragnet was laid. He was arrested in a downtown hotel where the trap was laid. It’s an internal issue with the University and, therefore, it is the prerogative of their disciplinary committee to look into the issue,” said Kiragu.

The police boss said the student had claimed the lecturer had been on her neck seeking sexual favours in exchange for marks for an examination paper he was yet to mark.

“The student felt pushed to the corner by the unrelenting demands of her lecturer and she reported the matter to the University. According to the report, the lecturer had been pestering the student promising her marks for a paper he was due to mark,” Mr Kiragu said.

He said the university had wanted to ascertain the authenticity of the student’s claim and thus advised her to lay a trap that led to his arrest.

Kiragu said he had ordered the university to submit a report to the police on the nature of disciplinary measures they had taken against the errant lecturer.

Kisii University Vice Chancellor, Prof John Akama said he would follow up on the matter and promised disciplinary action against anybody found culpable.

“I have been away and in fact I am just right back from Nairobi. I have neither heard nor been told of anything in relation to that. I am hearing it for the first time from you. I will follow up the issue and get back to you, ok!” he said.
