Nakuru Senator James Mungai has called on leaders in the county to encourage young people to register as voters in their respective regions.
During a leaders forum at the Sawela Lodge, Mungai said it was a waste of time to brace for 2017 if the people who are supposed to take part in the process are not eligible due to lack of voter's cards.
The Senator advised residents to get the important document so as to make an impact in terms of the good leadership during the elections.
“As much as we complain of poor leadership but we don’t want to acquire voters cards, the trend will never change,” he warned adding that its take personal initiative to register as a voter because voting is also a personal decision.
“The importance of the voting card is electing whoever you wish will drive your development agenda at any given time, but then, it’s interesting that a majority who possess the card never make time during the polling day. It is our responsibility us leaders to encourage the voting bloc to turn out and participate in the exercise,” he advised.
He further called on national Identity Card registration offices to up their game and ensure young people get the document on time to avoid any inconvenience.
The Senator is among the leaders in the county ranks to call for massive voter registration.
Last week, county assembly speaker Susan Kihika called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission office to launch a village to village registration drive that will ensure many people register ahead of the 2017 general election.
