Kiambu County Meteorological Department has notified residents to prepare for the effects of the impending El Nino rains between set to begin October through to December.

According to the department, highland areas of the county are expected to receive heavy rains which will bring both positive and negative effects in the region.

Speaking in his office in Kiambu on Wednesday, the County Director of Meteorological services Wilfred Lonyang’ole disclosed that areas such as Kagwe, Lari, Limuru, Githunguri, and upper parts of Uplands are expected to receive above normal rainfall.

Lonyang’ole pointed out that heavy storms, lightning, hailstones and floods are likely to be observed during the season.

He noted that the season is going to be accompanied by enhanced soil erosion and gully development, saying this will lead to the destruction of infrastructure such as roads and power lines.

He added that some areas will likely experience landslides which may lead to loss of lives for both human and livestock.

He affirmed that there were expectations of outbreaks of livestock and human diseases. He also warned that the heavy rains could result in the rotting of maize in the fields.

The weather expert further advised residents to take the advantage of the season to plant short seasoned crops, pastures and fodders crops and trees.

He also advised them harvest rain water for future use.

The weather expert also called on the value chain actors to report any disease outbreak or incidences both human and livestock immediately they suspect it is an outbreak to relevant authorities.

He added that contingency plans such as repairs of roads and water facilities should be implemented as a way of preventing risks and negative impacts of the expected El Nino rains.
