Residents living along the Thika superhighway have been asked to report vandals tampering with road signs to the police.
Speaking in his office on Monday, Ruiru OCPD Isaac Thuranira said investigations to bring to book people who had been involved in vandalising the metal bars along the highway were at an advanced stage.
He said it was a criminal offence to remove or buy any metal which had been removed from the road.
The OCPD said by stealing the metal bars with vital signs, they were endangering motorists by misleading them.
He put the metal dealers on notice saying their days were numbered if they did not stop engaging in the illicit business.
“I urge the public to support the police by embracing community policing so as to help eradicate wrong doers from community. When damage on these road signs is taking place, there could be a member of the public who may have witnessed the destruction but did not take a step to report this to the police,” said Thuranira.
He said each Kenyan has a responsibility to protect public property, report law breakers and use public property carefully by minding others.
“The road signs are very important to all drivers as we use them to plan on how to go through a certain section of the road. If I miss a road sign at a junction, I am likely to cause an accident as I maneuver to return to the right side of the road,” said Thuranira.
Moses Kilungu, a Kihunguro resident, called on those living along the road to help preserve the road signs by reporting anyone found tampering with the road signs.
“No Kenyan should see destruction of public property and keep quiet on the matter. It should immediately be reported to the police so that the vice is brought to an end,” said Thuranira.
