More than 60 youth and women from Mavoko Sub County were on Tuesday trained on entrepreneurship to enable them start their own businesses. The training was conducted by Machakos County Savings and Credit Society, an initiative of the county's Women Representative, Susan Musyoka.
Addressing press shortly after launching the training at St. Jude Catholic Church in Athi River town, Musyoka said the training was intended to empower women and youth on how to establish, manage and sustain small and medium enterprises as alternative ways of earning descent livelihoods.
Musyoka said the government is committing to empowering youth and women in spite of geographical regions from which they hail across the country.
She said there was need to sensitize the two groups on the available public funds provided for by the government such as youth, women and Uwezo fund to increase numbers of youth and women who seek them.
The legislature said Machakos County Savings and Credit Society was initiated to complement on the funds by enabling youth and women across the county access credit for capital and carry out businesses or expand their already existing enterprises.
Musyoka said the initiative also helps the two groups of people identify businesses that they are able to do alongside participating in governments procurement.
She encouraged Machakos youth and women to take advantage of the 30% minority group procurement constitutional provision to seek tenders in both national and county governments.
Musyoka said business is one effective strategy of reducing rates of unemployment among the youth and improving living standards of residents through decent livelihoods.
