The Mombasa County Government in partnership with Kenya Power have launched a Sh1.2 billion network upgrade and street lighting project in Mombasa County.
Kenya Power Managing Director and CEO, Dr Ben Chumo said the project will see the lighting up of streets of Mombasa City.
Mr Chumo said the company seeks to also automate the street lighting circuit and installing Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights and replace 5km of existing overhead street lighting conductors with insulated aero-bundled cable conductors.
The street lighting project will start in Mombasa Old Town at a cost of Sh45 million and it will be extended to the rest of the county at a cost of Sh1.2 billion.
“Mombasa County is the second city we are going to light up after Nairobi where we have completed the refurbishment of public lighting at a total cost of Sh953 million.”
“We intend to carry out a total upgrade of the electricity network in the coastal town to improve supply.,” Chumo said.
Speaking at Piggot in Mombasa Old Town, the CEO said the refurbishment project is expected to be completed by end of September 2015.
“The government’s goal is to facilitate provision of sustainable, efficient and effective public lighting in all counties,” added Mr Chumo.
Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho welcomed the initiative saying many residents in the county will benefit from this programme.
Governor Joho said, “The launch of this project will improve the living conditions of hundreds of residents in the county.”
The governor added that the project will be fundamental in enhancing security in the county.
