The Kenya Red Cross Society has advised residents in Kibera and Langata to take seriously the advisories being issued by various stakeholders concerning the highly anticipated El Nino rains.
Evans Gacheru, the coordinator of Kenya Red Cross Society, Langata Sub-County has called on the residents to heed the call on possible El Nino rains considering that Kibera and Langata have been identified as risk areas.
"The information that we have for the community is that probably we will be receiving above normal rainfall during this rainy season. It is important for residents who have been told to move to higher grounds need to heed that call because we might have a lot of flash-floods; people should be watchful and take necessary precautions as advised by the concerned groups or authorities," said Gicheru when he addressed the media on Wednesday at the Langata Sub-County headquarters during a stakeholders meeting on El Nino rains.
"People should be ready to cooperate by passing the right information to their colleagues as well as raising alarm in-case of emergency," he said.
According to Gicheru, KRCS has put mechanisms in place to help residents before, during and after the rains.
"We are ready with systems in place; we are preparing the community as we also prepare other mechanisms to help in tackling emergencies," added Gicheru.
