Kiambu Sub-County Livestock Officer Eustace Mureithi has urged Dairy Cooperative Societies in the area to tap into the immense opportunities in the dairy-processing sector to boost their member’s fortunes.
Speaking in his office on Monday, Mureithi said the potential of the dairy industry to enhance food security, healthy lifestyles and spur growth of the country’s economy is immense yet only a small fraction of the potential has been tapped.
He said the government recognises that agriculture is one of the key sectors that will drive the growth of the national economy and create jobs for the country’s youth.
“For this reason, the dairy sector will continue to benefit from increased attention and resource allocation by the government,” he said.
Mureithi further said that through the joint efforts by both the national and county government, the Kenya Dairy Board and the Kenya Dairy Processors Association, had increased processing capacity from 2.9 million litres per day in 2010 to the current 3.5 million litres per day.
He added that the ministry will continue to focus on building capacity for increased dairy production, improved quality of products and enhanced consumption.
He therefore urged Kiambu residents engaging in Dairy farming not to relent in the practice as they can reap millions through the venture.
