Gusii leaders allied to the ruling Jubilee Coalition have called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Fadou Bensouda to terminate the case facing Deputy President William Ruto and co-accused Radio presenter Joshua Sang.
They said the move will facilitate national healing and reconciliation as the country gears for the 2017 general elections.
Led by immediate former Kitutu Masaba MP, Walter Nyambati, who is also the Chairman of the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation, the leaders challenged the ICC prosecution to drop the case against the deputy president to allow Jubilee administration space to discharge its constitutional mandate bestowed upon its leadership by Kenyans during the 2013 general elections.
Speaking at Amasago Primary School grounds on Sunday during a fundraiser for Amasago Catholic Church towards the completion of the priest's official house, Nyambati led fellow parastatal chiefs from the Gusii community in calling for the termination of the case facing Ruto at the Hague-based court, describing it as a political slow pump meant to derail Jubilee's development agenda for the people of Kenya.
"I and my colleagues from this community wish to re-affirm our position that ICC should terminate the case facing our Deputy President William Ruto, to enable him become free in assisting the president to deliver the pledges they made to Kenyans during the 2013 general elections," said Nyambati.
Nyambati said the case facing the deputy president had taken unnecessarily long time to be concluded, causing uncertainty in the ruling Jubilee coalition, yet the president's case which was similar to that of his deputy had already been withdrawn for lack of evidence.
