The Teachers Service Commission Mombasa branch has advertised 500 vacancies for teachers in the county.

The 500, according to the advert seen by hivisasa.com will be recruited to fill vacant positions in primary and secondary schools.

In the Thursday’s advertisement, the teachers' employer said it intends to recruit 50,000 primary and 20,000 secondary school teachers on a three-month contract in the county.

The deadline for submitting applications is Monday October 5, with applicants expected to submit their letters and copies of their academic certificates through the county director of education.

TSC on Tuesday announced plans to recruit 70,000 teachers countrywide to fill positions left by primary and secondary school teachers presently on strike.

TSC said it is looking for candidates aged below 45 years, who have original professional and academic certificates and must be registered as teachers as per Section 23 of the Teachers Service Commission Act.

The recruits will be hired on a three-month contract.

Teachers have for the last one month been an strike protesting government failure to award them a salary increment as directed by court.

Knut and Kuppet have been defiant to a directive by TSC to return to class as negotiations over the pay rise are completed.

High Court Judge Jorum Abuodha has directed the striking teachers to return to school twice, but the tutors insist only their union leaders can direct them to return to class.
