Women can shape the economy if they take up the initiative and venture into income generating projects, a member of county assembly has said.
Speaking in Turi Ward yesterday, area MCA Michael Wang’ombe challenged women to give men a run for their money in business and other sectors of the economy.
“I am a believer of the saying ‘what a man can do, a woman can do better’ if given the right mentorship, environment and support,” he said.
According to the local leader, the just concluded Global Entrepreneurship Summit was a wake up call for any woman out there with the willpower to transform the society.
“In their inaugural speeches during the global summit, our president and his American counterpart made it very clear that women were proving to be significant drivers of the economy,” he said.
“A majority of female entrepreneurs who spoke at the event were signifying the potential we have in women. As a mother, caretaker, leader and professional, it’s time we gave our sisters chance to transform the society,” he added.
Wang’ombe promised to sensor a motion at the Nakuru county assembly that will see women entrepreneurs across the county identified and recognised so as to act as an inspiration to young girls.
President Kenyatta expressed confidence in his government’s willingness to create an enabling environment for prosperity and development.
He said that women who were ready to take up challenges and turn them to opportunities were the corner stones of any vibrant society.
President Obama noted that a woman is the powerhouse of any society, saying that the American government was committed at boosting the woman.
He challenged women to be ambassadors of the change they wanted to see tomorrow because according to him, Kenya was on the move and women were to be part of the desired change.
The two presidents were speaking at the global event, a first of its own in East Africa with Kenya having the opportunity of being the 1st country in sub Saharan Africa to host it.
Wang’ombe asked women to make use of the Uwezo fund to help them steer their projects.
