Huruma Ward Representative Peter Chomba has accused the Uasin Gishu county government of bias in evicting of hawkers from Eldoret town.

Speaking to journalists at Eldoret town on Sunday, Chomba alleged that the ongoing eviction of hawkers from the Eldoret Central Business District (CBD) is based on tribes.

He said that the county is targeting some tribes in evictions a move he said is ethnic-based and unacceptable.

The MCA said that he has information that the county plans to evict some hawkers and leave others accusing Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno of allowing the process to continue.

“It’s unfair and unacceptable for the county government to use tribal affiliations in evicting hawkers,” he said.

Chomba said he would not allow such acts to go uncorrected.

"If hawkers are being evicted then they should all go," he said.

The MCA said tribalism was derailing development in county and that leaders and the government must treat all the people equally.

Responding to the MCA claims, the Deputy Governor termed the allegations as malicious and false.

"All hawkers are being evicted without favouritism. This is meant to curb cases of crime and create order within the town,” he said.

Chemno has said that evicted hawkers will be give alternative places for their businesses.
