The Kenya Farmers Association director Kipkorir arap Menjo has urged the national government through the Ministry of Agriculture to use the money meant for El Nino preparedness to buy maize from farmers.
Speaking during Mashujaa Day celebrations at 64 stadium Eldoret, Menjo said since it is harvesting time in the region, the national government should use the money allocated for El Nino to buy maize from farmers to prevent exploitation by middlemen.
"Uasin Gishu County produces over four million bags of maize and yet the government through the mMinistry of Agriculture has set aside Sh2.7 billion meaning that only one million bags will be bought. Where will the four million bags go? I urge the national government to use the money meant for El Nino rains to buy more maize from farmers to prevent exploitation from middlemen," he said on Tuesday.
He urged the national government through the Ministry of Agriculture to open the National Cereals and Produce Board for farmers to present their produce before the heavy rains start.
