Students of Kisii University enrolled under the self-sponsorship program should only to pay at least three quarters of the fee ahead of the semester exams scheduled late on this month.
Addressing a group of student leaders on Monday at the institution, Professor John Akama said the policy was laid about four years ago and the university had no intention of changing it.
This comes after a group of students who had compiled with the tradition were reportedly denied exam cards, an issue that sparked a heated debate among the student population.
“The university is a place of rules and traditions. Whoever purporting that the institution is not ready to respect the tradition is misled. I want to announce today that self-sponsored students will only be required to pay three quarters of the fee and no one should change that,” he said.
Professor Akama cautioned employees who were allegedly intimidating students in the name of not having paid the three quarter of their fee but insisted that government sponsored students ought to clear the fee completely.
“Every worker must know that this is an institution of rules. Workers who will be found guilty of oppressing our students will face disciplinary actions. However, government students must pay the entire school fee,” he said.
His announcement was welcomed by the student union chairman, Rodgers Nyanumba who hailed the VC of standing in solidarity with students.
“I must thank him of being firm and precise. No one should contravene the regulations. Many of self-sponsored students come from poor backgrounds and it is important that their rights are respected,” he said.
