Traders at Wakulima Market have expressed discontent with the way the county government was handling them.
On Sunday, the traders accused the county government of concentrating on collecting levies at the expense of their working conditions.
A majority who talked to Hivisasa.com lamented of how county askaris were harassing them, not withstanding anyone out to question them.
“We are being treated as if we are not taxpayers in Nakuru. If the county government cannot listen to us to our grievances, who will?” posed their chairperson David Mwangi.
Speaking on behalf of the over 100 traders, Mwangi decried the filthy and disease-prone conditions they were being forced to work under because of the uncollected garbage.
“As you can see, garbage collecting points are very few to serve all of us. They are always full by 9am and then somebody expects us to work in such a condition the whole day because they are usually collected the following day,” he noted.
“Most of us here are dealing with perishable goods, things like vegetables and fruits need immediate removal after being deposited in the bins,” he added.
The traders also called on the Kinuthia Mbugua led government to light up the market to boost security arguing that a majority of them close their stalls very late.
Although they were full of praise for the little effort the county government had implemented to see them operating well, they called for improvement for a more productive and stress free Wakulima Market.
