Several youth from Athi River town have resorted to water vending business as it out stands to be among the most booming in the town apparently.

Joel Kome, a young from Athi river said on Saturday that the business had got lots of returns in terms of profits due to the commodities high demand.

"There are lots of opportunities in water business within Athi River town given that the available supply cannot meet the increasingly high demand," said Kome.

Kome who uses a donkey to collect water from Athi River's Export Processing Zone Authority to door steps of his clients said there was neither law nor rules to regulate their prices.

"No one controls our prices given that the demand is very high and everybody keep scrambling for commodities, each of us (suppliers) have numerous orders," said Kome.

Kome disclosed that they charge their prices for the water based on rates of demand and numbers of suppliers in the trade at that particular time.

He said majority of the residents prefer water from EPZA because its clean, fresh and commonly consumed by residents for both domestic and other uses.

Kome said they buy the water at Sh3 per 20 litre jerrycan from the source and sells it between Sh25 and Sh50 depending on the demand.

He noted that most of his colleagues who use hand cats to transport water to their clients sell their water at only Sh5 since they draw them from nearby bore holes.

Kome said majority of the residents dislike the bore hole water since it is salty and also fades clothes whenever used for washing.
