Residents of Lela in Kisumu County who rely on rainfall as their main source of water are experiencing a shortage of the commodity.
They said most of their storage facilities are empty following the erratic rainfall that has been experienced in the area for the past two months.
“Rainfall has been inconsistent for some time now. Even if it rains, the amount is inadequate. Our tanks have now dried up,” said Ken Ouma.
The residents are now forced to buy water from vendors, and a majority admitted that they are not sure about its safety.
Additionally, the water is too expensive and they are finding it hard to cope with thesituation.
“A 20-litre jerrican of water goes for about Sh25. This is too much considering that you have to buy a lot of it to meet the needs. You also have to factor in the cost of treating the water because it is dirty,” said Catherine Ochieng.
The locals spoke to Hivisasa on Monday now want the Kisumu government to find a lasting solution to the problem.
