Shinning Hope For Kibera Community (SHOFCO) and the Youth Peer Providers (YPP) organised a talk show for teachers in Kibera to help them understand how to guide students on sex education and reproduction.
The teachers who participated were empowered to teach their colleagues and pupils on the topics.
The event at SHOFCO offices in Kamukunji area was attended by about 50 teachers from different schools, both private and public.
The tutors were advised not to be judgmental to pupils but be friendly and create a rapport to help those who are sexually active know how to protect themselves to curb the rising cases of early pregnancies and abortions among school going children.
“Through creating a rapport you will be very friendly to pupils and they will feel free to talk to you about any problem they are facing,” said peer counselor Mary Akinyi.
The teachers hailed the programme saying they had gained a lot of information on sexuality and reproduction and are ready to educate their students.
Truphena Jageni from Olympic Primary School said teachers spend more time with pupils than their parents and therefore had a better chance to educate them.
“Some parents are very harsh on their children. This makes a child to fear the parent and therefore cannot openly tell them anything about their sex life. Also, some parents are too shy to speak to their children about sex education thinking they will be teaching them bad manners. This is not good and that is why we teachers we prefer empowering pupils about sexual matters,’ she added.
The teachers suggested that they will introduce a parent’s day in their schools so that they can teach parents the importance of holding such talks with their children.
