The national and county government of Nyamira have been urged to set aside funds to renovate public schools in the county.
According to Nyamira Parents Association chairperson Dennis Mokaya, most institutions in the area are in a bad state and the construction of new classes and rehabilitation of the existing ones is needed urgently to provide a conducive learning environment for students and pupils.
He said that currently, learning in the open while seated on bare, dusty and jigger-infested grounds, or on rough, hard stones, was something learners had become too familiar with.
It i considered almost normal by the area residents, according to Mr Mokaya, who terms the situation 'dangerous' for the learners.
Mr Mokaya said it is very challenging for most children who have to learn amid numerous deficiencies ranging from not having proper classrooms, desks, and learning materials in their schools while the national government is capable of providing all those.
“Learning under an inhospitable environment is almost becoming the norm here. It is quite unfortunate,” he regretted.
Mokaya was speaking at Gesiaga Secondary School on Sunday during their annual prayer day for form four candidates.
