A 23-year-old man was on Wednesday sentenced to serve 12 months behind bars after being found guilty of stealing a pump from his former employer.
Gerald Shimenga was convicted and sentenced on his own plea of guilty to the theft charge when he appeared before Winam Resident Magistrate in Kisumu.
The court had earlier heard that the accused used to work for Helen Nyamuma who is based in Miwani, Kisumu County up to December last year when he was fired for alleged misconduct.
In January 27, the accused known as Shimenga who is now based in Ojolla, still in Kisumu County, went to the farm under the cover of darkness, disconnected a booster pump near the farmhouse and took it to his home in Ojolla.
However, Police investigations led to his arrest and subsequent recovery of the pump valued at Sh70,0000.
In his defense, Shimenga told the court that the employer fired him illegally without paying all the arrears she owed him, therefore the pump was a means of revenging.
Winam Resident Magistrate Philip Oilo however, dismissed the defense asking him to use the right channel laid down by the law to address such matters.
Three months of his sentence were suspended on condition of good behavior, leaving him to serve an effective nine months in jail.
