Two people died on the spot as 40 others were seriously injured when the matatu they were travelling collided head-on yesterday along the Tawa-Masii road in Machakos.
The Thursday morning accident that caused huge traffic snarl up along the highway involved two Nissan Mini-buses.
The driver of one of the matatu is said to have been overtaking another vehicle while at high speed when he collided with the oncoming bus.
Confirming the accident, Area Traffic Police boss, Peter Njeru said the drivers of the two vehicles died on the spot.
He added that 40 passengers of the two ill-feted vehicles survived with injuries and are recuperating at the Machakos Level Five Hospital.
“From the initial investigations, the accident was as a result of reckless driving but thorough investigations are underway,” he said.
Mr Njeru warned rogue motorists who are flouting traffic regulations saying that they will be arrested.
He said that cases of accidents along the Machakos-Tawa-Masii road have gone up.
“We will launch a crackdown on rogue motorists in a bid to tame the rising accidents,” he said.
At the same time, the traffic police boss said that bumps will be erected along the road to reduce accidents.
