Administration Police from Athi River on Tuesday destroyed 50 kilograms of bhang valued at Sh 200, 000 local market price.
Mavoko Assistant County Commissioner, David Tegutwa, who led the destruction at Athi River Divisional headquarters said the consignment was seized from Kisumu Ndogo Slum in Athi River town in weir hours of Tuesday morning at around 4.00 am.
Tegutwa said the administration police with assistance from Mavoko location chief, Nzau Komo had reacted to tip offs from members of the public that there was a woman trading in bhang in large scale within the slum.
"The officers raided the woman's premises at 4.00 am this morning and recovered the 50 kilograms consignment of bhang," said Tegutwa.
He said the suspected woman vendor in her late 40's who is well known by the area residents as a bhang supplier to majority of peddlers in the region managed to escape and police are pursuing her.
The consignment that was packed in four bails of 12.5 kilograms each and skilfully rapped in polythene bags was burnt to ashes using petrol by the administration police with assistance from chiefs from the region.
Tegutwa said the police force is committed to ensuring that supplies of hard drugs and substances were cut as they eliminate demand from the region.
He warned those who trade in such substances that their days were numbered and advised them to stop the illegal business with immediate effect to avoid facing wrath of law.
The commissioner called on well wishers from Mavoko to sponsor youth programs and offer entrepreneurial training to the vulnerable youth to avoid being idle and break vicious poverty cycles to compliment government efforts through various youth programs.
