The Mombasa County government has signed an agreement with the Aga Khan Foundation East Africa (AKF) to train Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers.
AKF’s director for policy and partnership, Shem Ochola said the programme will ensure teachers get practical and theoretical skills.
Ochalo said the foundation will equip teachers with professional skills to handle children in Mombasa County.
The foundation will also provide training to teachers, education officials, school management committees and communities.
“More than 200 teachers, education officers and parents will be trained in effective education. The foundation is focused in providing high quality but affordable education to middle income families,” he said.
According to the director, parents will also be taught the value of quality early childhood education and good parenting during the programme which will run for the next five years.
“We have training facilities and we expect to produce the best teachers who are well equipped to handle children,” said Ochola.
“The aim of the programme is to improve the quality of early childhood education and transform the classroom experience of learners and help lift the education standards in Mombasa County,” he added.
Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho who was present during the signing of the memorandum on Tuesday said Madrasa Early Childhood Development Teacher training will equip teachers with professional skills for handling children.
Governor Joho said the county government will allocate and disburse funds from its budget to facilitate the training of teachers.
“We are hopeful that the training will provide sustainable learning results and a smooth transition of pupils from nursery school to primary school.”
“It is difficult for some children who did not have an opportunity for a clear and strong foundation while in nursery school to catch up and compete with other students who have gone through ECDE programmes,” said the governor.
