Nearly half of patients seeking outpatient services in Kisii County are suffering from malaria, county director of health has said.

Speaking on Wednesday at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital during the closing of a meeting with health offices in the county, Kisii Director of Health, Geoffrey Ontomu said the situation is worrying.

He said that health facilities in the county continue record a high percentage of people with malaria.

The county director of health urged residents to seek information around the disease and learn the ways top protect themselves from the disease. Ontomu further urged residents to be on the forefront in the fight against malaria.

Ontomu hinted that the current situation is a sign of an outbreak of the disease in the region and urged residents to seek immediate treatment once they feel unwell.

He also revealed that the county government through the ministry of health had put measures in place to give out mosquito nets to the residents urging them to put them to proper use.

Areas that are most affected according the research that was done by his office, are South Mugirango, Bonchari and Kitutu Chache constituencies.

“We need to fight this disease since it can cause death, let us join together to fight it and reduce this high percentage that is being recorded," he said.
