Consumption of illicit brew in Banana location of Kiambu County has been blamed for the increased number of deaths in the area.

Speaking on Wednesday, the Assistant County Commissioner for Kiambaa Division, Wycliffe Munanda expressed concern over consumption of illicit brew in the area despite the ongoing crackdown.

Munanda said unemployment and high number of bars in the area have led to alcoholism among the residents. He says some of the youth have been engaging in theft to finance their drinking habits.

"The high level of unemployment has made people resort to liquor brewing and selling so as to earn a living and these brews are sold at cheap prices as their market is readily available,” he said.

He warned that those found in bars before and after drinking hours would be arrested while condemning incidents of intoxicated men spotted lying in ditches in early morning hours.

"This situation is very depressing and if the trend continues, I am afraid there will be no men for tomorrow due to alcoholism in this location,’’ he remarked.

He says traders arrested brewing and selling illegal liquor should be fined heavily to discourage others from engaging in the business.

The assistant county commissioner also called on parents and families of affected alcoholics to take them to rehabilitation centres to enable them to reform.
