The Senate should expedite the Bill on separation of county assembly from executive as a way of making assemblies independent if the war on corruption in the county levels has to succeed, a Gesima politician has said.

This comes few days after an auditor general’s report revealed massive embezzlement of funds in the Nyamira County assembly where the MCAs were allegedly bribed by executive to pass controversial bills besides getting hefty allowances contrary to SRC recommendations.

But on Monday, Mr Charles Maroko accused the Senate of delaying to pass the Bill that will see the county assemblies in the county become autonomies without unnecessary interference from the executive.

“I am not shocked with the controversial spending as pointed out by the auditor general’s report. The real problem is in the Senate that has delayed the Bill that intends to give assemblies powers to determine their own budget. This is the only way we can curb the emerging corruption issues,” he said.

He urged the Senate to work expeditiously on the Bill, besides urging senators to be more vigilant in their oversight roles regarding the counties.

“The Senate should even sit extra hours to continue discussing the Bill. It is in the second reading and that will even make us more concerned. It will be a bit easier to know who mismanaged funds when the two entities are separated. Otherwise MCAs and governors will continue working as a team to loot our county,” he said.
