Young people are losing their innovative and creative prowess in pursuit of academic excellence which sadly, some never achieve, a senior police officer has said.

Speaking in his office on Monday, County Administration Police commander Francis Kirathe noted that different correctional facilities in the country are home to many young people that found themselves on the wrong side of the law because of pressure from society.

According to Kirathe, the society was too much into academics at the expense of other life sustaining skills that young people can perform far much better as compared to how they perform in school.

“To a majority of young people who are in school, the society has made them define success as attaining good grades in national examinations, failure to which you have to struggle too much to lead a decent life,” he said.

He regretted the fact that such perceptions have led to a dissolutioned young generation that does not believe in the power of talent and innovation.

Kirathe disagreed with the school of thought that driving a big car and a big office are the measures of success in modern society.

“We have examples of people who live good lives because of their talents and willingness to go an extra mile to bring about change in society. Let us not instill fear in our youth because they want to do anything including breaking the law to lead good lives,” he advised.

He was reacting to allegations that a number of schoolgoing teenagers were arrested on Sunday at a popular entertainment joint in the town during a back to school jam session.

He called on teachers, parents and guardians to ensure young people are modelled in a manner that they learn to always accept the outcome of any situation in live in a positive way other than faking ways to survive.
