Two men were on Wednesday thrown behind bars for an effective 14 months each for assaulting a policeman who had refused to release their detained relative.
Joseph Omwega and Stephen Mukungwe were convicted of assault by Winam Resident Magistrate Philip Oilo who found them guilty after having an overwhelming evidence.
Their relative Cleophas Muhonga who was detained at Mamboleo Police Station in Kisumu also faces the same fate after he teamed up with the duo to assault Constable Stephen Marete who sustained serious injuries on his head, back and arm.
The trio on Thursday blamed their actions on influence of beer. They requested the court to free them because they were not in their right senses while committing the offence.
Magistrate Oilo sentenced them for 18 months in jail apiece for the offence allegedly committed on August 25 last year in Kisumu City.
While passing the sentence, Magistrate Oilo said Muhonga and Marete had committed a serious offence by assaulting law-enforcers.
"You portrayed the highest degree of being disrespectful to law enforcers. Your case must be an eye opener to all would-be offenders that police officers are there to maintain peace," said Magistrate Oilo.
