The Annual learning assessment conducted to raise awareness on the levels of literacy and numeracy among school going children in Kenya is currently undergoing in Limuru. It is expected to unveil the literacy and numeracy levels in the area.

In an exclusive interview in her office in Limuru on Tuesday, the Uwezo Coordinator for Limuru Sub-county Ms.Ruth Karani said that the said survey which was rolled out two weeks ago will run for slightly over a month until October 19th 2015. Ms.Karani explained that the assessment is aimed to be conducted in 157 sub-counties in the country and that it includes a random selection of 30 villages in each sub-county and across 20 households in every village.

She said that they have about 9000 volunteers conducting the survey across the 157 counties adding that at the moment, they were focusing on recruiting the volunteers who will be assigned the role of researchers.

“From each village, we have recruited Kenyan nationals who can speak both English and Swahili, have access to a mobile phone and have excelled in their national exams,” she explained. The coordinator reiterated that they were also being assisted by local administration in the villages for security and mobilization of other resources at the grassroots level.

She explained that the findings of the research which have been authorized by the National Council for Science and Technology will be used to come up with relevant recommendations on how to improve learning in Kenyan schools in order to increase literacy and numeracy levels.

Ms. Karani added that the research is coordinated by partner organizations working together with Uwezo Kenya and went on to further state that in Limuru, the study is carried out by Rays of Hope Initiative, also a non for profit organization.
