A section of youth from Athi River Sub-County on Monday urged the government to ensure that the recruitment exercises for various forces are conducted fairly in the region.

The youth said majority of them have never been contented with the previous exercises.

"We are calling on the government to do all it can this time around so that the upcoming recruitment of youth into Kenya Defence Forces be done fairly," said Janet Achieng'.

Achieng' lamented that all her previous attempts to join various police forces had hit a snag since she kept being eliminated at early stages.

John Ojiambo, also a youth from the sub-county alleged that the previous recruiting officials for the various forces in Athi River, have never been fair.

Ojiambo claimed that several youth who hail from districts far from Athi River had in the past been recruited at the centre while those qualified from the region were dropped for reasons only known to the officers in charge.

"We are always aggrieved whenever we see youth ferried in vehicles from other regions to take up positions meant for the Athi River locals whenever there is a recruitment exercise," said Ojiambo.

He, however, noted that they don't know the channels of raising their complaints to the government given that the officers who are sent to the area for the recruitment don't hail from the region.

They said they would turn up in numbers for the KDF recruitment scheduled September 25 at the Kenya Meat Commission grounds.

Their pleas come barely a month after a 21-year-old man from Athi River town wrote a letter to the Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet, requesting a direct recruitment into the police forces.

Boniface Malila, on August 20 wrote a letter to the IG claiming that he had lost faith in the recruitment, having participated in the exercises for five consecutive years since he graduated from high school in 2012 in vain.

Malila said he has been traveling from the town where he works as a casual to his home district in Makueni each time a recruitment exercise is announced by the government.

He said he has lost hope in the exercises' credibility and would therefore not participate in any if the IG does not give him the direct recruitment he had asked for.
