A section of Nyamira leaders have accused the government and the opposition of failing to address urgent issues facing victims of the 2007-08 post election violence.

They say leaders are busy duelling on claims and counter accusations over who fixed Deputy President William Ruto instead of working on ensuring the immediate resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across the country.

Led by Bogichora MCA, Buttah Omanga on Wednesday, the leaders challenged both the government and the opposition through parliament to audit the resettlement process by the Ministry of Devolution to ensure IDPs get justice.

They said the blame games were not necessary since Ruto’s case was ongoing and the debate was unlikely to change the outcome.

“It is sad that we are still talking of who fixed but we no longer talk of IDPs. Parliament has not questioned the criteria used by the devolution ministry to compensate victims and many of them are landless. The debate will not change the direction of the case since it is in the advanced stage,” Omanga said.

Majority Whip Peter Maroro urged Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria to record a statement at the ICC over the alleged witness coaching claims to avert any possible tension.

“We have heard a lot from Mr Kuria and this is the time to record the statement with ICC and not in public rallies. The claims might throw our country to unimaginable situation which no one is ready to get into,” he added.

Omanga accused leaders of blocking the natural course of justice and demanded that the government also recovers the land which was allegedly taken away from IDPs in their initial settlement areas.

“They were staying somewhere and somebody is sitting pretty in their pieces of land. We should be having such a debate to ensure victims are duly compensated and not the fixing claims,” he said.

Kuria had recently sparked a debate over coaching of witnesses to fix the DP and directly linked CORD’s Raila Odinga and Martha Karua of NARC-K as the chief architects of the DP’s woes.
