A cleric in Nyamira County has challenged Christian politicians to emulate their Muslim counterparts and speak for the church especially now that the state is in the process of making rules to regulate religious organisations.
Bishop Stephen Manoti of the National Independent Church of Africa (NICA), who is also the member National Council of Churches in Kenya (NCCK) Nyamira county challenged Christian politicians to defend the church against being muzzled by the state.
“Whenever Muslim politicians feel that their religion is under attack, they always come out openly to condemn such aggression and I wonder why our Christian politicians turn a blind eye to religious issues,” he added
The Bishop said the government should not generalize churches based on a few unscrupulous clergymen, since many of them have played important roles including initiating development ventures such as schools and hospitals.
He said different churches should be left to decide on the academic qualifications of their spiritual leaders.
Bishop Manoti said if the state wants to regulate the church then it should do so after conducting a referendum to establish the position of the Christians.
The NICA Bishop was speaking at a burial ceremony in Sironga.
