Several residents of Riamanoti area in Borabu constituency turned up in large numbers on Sunday to participate in the monthly exercise of contributing funds that are used to assist needy students from institutions of higher learning.
The movement, Education for Life, was started by former area MP Winfred Ombui in 2010 and has since supported more than 100 students from the village in different universities across the nation.
According to chairman Peter Nyabando, the movement will soon open its own businesses that will be used to generate income to support education in the region.
“Ever since we started this great movement, I have seen many of our children go to school and graduate with very good marks. I want to emphasize today that we will change the programme a bit and start investing in matatu and real estate so that we generate income,” he said.
Mr Nyabando asked beneficiaries to give back to the society whenever they get formal employment besides challenging area residents to use the program in a bid to reach children who have dropped out of school.
“This is a good movement and I would like to call upon those who have benefited to give back to the society so as to help another kid who is in need of help. We should also use the programme to reach children who have dropped out of school in a bid to get them back,” he added.
As a community, they emphasized the importance of working together to support education as a way of increasing the level of literacy in the county.
