Residents of Bosamaro ward in West Mugirango constituency traversed trading centres in the area as part of their annual exercise to collect funds for supporting orphans.

Speaking during the walk on Tuesday, Alice Momanyi, the community organiser, said the event, which was launched in 2011, has seen more than Sh2 million collected and subsequently distributed to local institutions with a number of orphans.

She urged wellwishers and other business enterprises to help the community raise targeted record of Sh10 million that will be used to establish a children centre in the village.

“The number of orphaned children has been increasing substantially and that is why we came with the annual event to help orphans. We have been supporting their education and upkeep but the funds we collect as not enough. I would like to urge the community to help us raise 10million to build a children center in our village,” she said.

According to her, it has been quite cumbersome to house orphaned children without an established structure that could serve the purpose.

“The problem has been that we have been experiencing difficulties in housing these children because of their increased number. It hasn’t been easy for us and that is why we urgently need a structure to house over 40 children who are under our care,” she added.

During the exercise, Sh150,000 was raised with main guest Catherine Nyamato promising to contribute Sh200,000 towards construction of the children home.

“I am really overwhelmed and I want to promise my Sh200,000 support. I will talk to other well-wishers. This is a fantastic event and I wish other regions emulate you,” she said.
