ODM politics are likely to witness another internal contest after a confidant to Opposition leader Raila Odinga hinted a possible plan to prepare Budalangi MP Ababu Namwamba to take over the mantle from him.

The party has experienced internal wrangles possibly due to expected retirement of Mr Odinga from active politics after 2017 polls, if he fails to beat incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Timothy Bosire, who is currently National Treasurer of ODM on Sunday said that Mr Namwamba was the most suitable to take over the part leadership as a way of confirming to Kenyans that the party observes national representation outlook.

“ODM is a national party and we are always ready to work as a team. The succession politics within our party should not make you panic at all. We are an organised team and we trust our youths. For instance Ababu (Namwamba) is doing a great job and can even take us to the next destination,” Mr Bosire said.

He said the youthful ODM Secretary General had rejuvenated the party by leading the 'Kipande initiative' team that aims at marshaling people from perceived opposition stronghold to apply for National Identification cards.

“I think Ababu has done well the few months he has been in the position. He is equally intelligent and I have no issue with his good reception by Kenyans. But it’s too early though because Jakom (Mr Odinga) is still vibrant and energetic,” he said.

He said he would therefore not be surprised if Mr Namwamba took over the leadership when Mr Odinga officially announces his retirement.

“If he becomes one (party leader), it will not be a rude shock to me. He has worked extremely hard for it and I am quite certain he is fit for the position,” added Mr Bosire, during a meet constituent’s tour at Mochenwa region.
