A section of youths in Kibera want the National Youth Service (NYS) project restarted after it was put on hold by the national government a few months ago.

The NYS project, a collaboration with the Ministry of Devolution and Planning, was aimed at cleaning up the slum in a bid to curb diseases arising from the clogged sewerage system.

Majority of youths benefited from the programme as they were paid for the services rendered.

On Friday, Ryan Burele said he would love to meet President Uhuru Kenyatta and appeal to him to bring back the project as it was his only source of income.

Annette Bwire from Makina said the project was not only an avenue for revenue but also a good exercise to keep the place clean.

She pleaded with the Devolution ministry to uphold the project and the government to fund the project.

“It was always keeping me busy and I was sure I was going to get some good money out of it,’’ said another youth,Lorene Mokeira.

The project has helped the residents in garbage disposal whereby they dispose of their litter in containers donated by the NYS.
