A few days after the Kisii County Meteorological department announced that the county is well equipped to handle the forth coming El nino rains, business people from Kisii town have expressed their fears of making losses during the long rains.

The business people, led by their chairman Walter Nyakundi, expressed their fears, noting that most drainage systems in the town are blocked, which might lead to flooding.

They also accused the Kisii County government of not being prepared enough for the El nino rains, noting that most roads and bridges in the town are impassable during rainy seasons.

“As a business community, there are concerns like the bridge at Storm Hotel as you go to prisons has had several blockages for a number of days now. Whenever it rains, the road becomes completely impassable,” he said.

Nyakundi also added that most of the culverts and sewer lines in Kisii town are blocked, and there is urgent need to unblock them before the rains start in order to reduce the flooding, something he said causes a lot of traffic in the town as vehicles have to move slowly through the water.

They called on the county government to keep its promise of working on the drainage system to reduce the rate of deaths experienced during the rainy seasons in the county.
