Nyamira county women's representative Alice Chae has sponsored a group of women to propagate the campaign against Female Genital Mutilation in the area.
Women under the umbrella of Riruma Methodist church fellowship yesterday took their campaign to various social outlets including churches in order to sensitise the public with regards to the fight against FGM in the area.
The 8 members from the churches from various Sub-Counties within Nyamira on Tuesday visited various locations which are highly affected by the practice.
Speaking at Nyaikuro SDA church, their chairperson Mrs. Roseline Mogaka said that it was an initiative aimed at giving back to the society by educating the public under the support and sponsorship of Alice Chae.
She said that the FGM practice has been a menace in the county due to cultural norms and customs of different tribes who believe that young women must undergo the rite of passage as a way of preparing them for marriage.
Pastor Michael Nyangena who was also present described female circumcision as a 'cancer in the community' which should be dealt with.
He further noted that the practise was an outdated culture overtaken by time and that it should never be practiced in the present.
Some of the victims who had already gone through FGM expressed their reservations on the same citing actual damages such as dehumanisation and loss of blood during child birth among others.
